About Prof. Boucher
Professor Barbara J. Boucher is a globally recognized expert in metabolic medicine, with over 50 years of research and clinical experience. Her pioneering work has shaped our understanding of vitamin D deficiency (hypovitaminosis D) and its role in diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular health.
She has also investigated the effects of environmental exposures such as betel‑quid chewing on metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes, and she continues to explore intergenerational influences of nutrition and environment on human health through collaborative cohort studies worldwide.
Prof. Boucher is passionate about translating complex scientific discoveries into practical insights for public health and clinical care, bridging the gap between research, policy, and patient wellbeing.
Research Focus
- Vitamin D and Human Disease: Investigating how vitamin D deficiency influences metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and vascular complications.
- Transgenerational Health Impacts: Studying maternal and paternal nutritional/environmental effects on offspring health, including cardiovascular and metabolic risks.
- Environmental Risk Factors: Researching the metabolic consequences of betel‑quid chewing and other lifestyle factors.
- Pancreatic and Hepatic Physiology: Exploring vitamin D’s influence on pancreatic islets and the hepatic renin-angiotensin system.
- Public Health Translation: Guiding recommendations for vitamin D supplementation and lifestyle interventions to reduce disease risk.
