About Dr. Hollis

Dr. Bruce W. Hollis is a leading expert in nutritional biochemistry, with a specialized focus on vitamin D metabolism during pregnancy and infancy. As a Professor Emeritus at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), he has dedicated over four decades to advancing our understanding of vitamin D’s role in human health. His pioneering research has significantly influenced clinical practices and public health guidelines regarding vitamin D supplementation.

Key Contributions & Research

  • Maternal and Infant Health: Dr. Hollis’s groundbreaking studies have demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy is essential for fetal development and maternal health. His research has shown that higher doses of vitamin D, such as 4,000–6,000 IU/day, are both safe and effective in maintaining optimal vitamin D levels during pregnancy.
  • FDA-Approved Assays: He developed the first FDA-cleared assays for measuring 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which have been widely used in clinical diagnostics.
  • Clinical Trials: Dr. Hollis has conducted extensive clinical trials assessing the safety and efficacy of vitamin D supplementation, particularly in pregnant women, contributing to the establishment of current supplementation guidelines.
  • Innovative Research Approaches: His laboratory was the first to be awarded an Investigational New Drug (IND) by the FDA to conduct studies with elevated levels of vitamin D. This IND remains in effect and has been accessed by many investigators to conduct their own studies.

Awards & Recognition

  • 1991: George Bray Outstanding Scientific Achievements Award in Obesity Research, American Society for Nutrition.
  • NIH-Funded Research: Dr. Hollis has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for over three decades, supporting his research on vitamin D’s role in pregnancy and childhood health.
  • High Citation Impact: With over 63,000 citations, Dr. Hollis is recognized as a leading expert in the field of vitamin D research.
