Studies have shown that vitamin D levels during pregnancy can affect the health of the pregnancy as well as the life-long health of the child.

Recent research has even found that low maternal vitamin D levels during pregnancy were linked to poorer neurocognitive outcomes in children at age 4.  Mothers with insufficient vitamin D, particularly during the third trimester, had children who performed worse on tests of executive function and visual-motor precision.

Building on these findings, Drs. Hollis and Wagner emphasize that maintaining sufficient vitamin D throughout pregnancy is essential for healthy brain development, highlighting trimester-specific effects and calling for personalized vitamin D testing and supplementation rather than one-size-fits-all guidelines.

On Wednesday 11/12 at 11am PT, GrassrootsHealth will be hosting another “Vitamin D Study Hour” focusing on this latest study and how prenatal vitamin D status influences children’s long-term cognitive health, featuring Dr. Bruce Hollis.
