Magnesium is a mineral essential for many functions within the body including blood pressure regulation, bone health, blood glucose control, and vitamin D activation. Magnesium deficiency is common world-wide and low magnesium levels have been linked to atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rate), hypertension, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and migraines.
Earlier this year, GrassrootsHealth started offering a magnesium test with the Elements Panel, which includes testing your vitamin D level along with essential elements magnesium, selenium, zinc, copper, and copper:zinc ratio, and toxic heavy metals cadmium, lead, and mercury. Among the 122 participants who have tested their whole blood magnesium levels, 87% have levels between 30-49 mg/L (3.0-4.9 mg/dL).
The average magnesium level (40 mg/L) is on the higher end of the lab reference range (28-46 mg/L), but this range only indicates the range of typical results found in the population the lab serves but does not necessarily indicate the optimal range for health.
At this point, we have not tracked the correlations with your tested magnesium levels and any health outcomes, nor the actual correlations with other nutrients. Your ongoing participation in this project will contribute greatly to everyone’s knowledge about ‘what does it take to help with…..?’ and ‘what is the optimal magnesium level?’. We will continue to track the information and report back to you about what we see. At this point, we need 1000 participants to have ‘statistical significance’. Keep up the good work!

STEP 1 Order your at-home blood spot test kit to measure vitamin D and other nutrients of concern to you, such as omega-3s, magnesium, essential and toxic elements (zinc, copper, selenium, lead, cadmium, mercury); include hsCRP as a marker of inflammation or HbA1c for blood sugar health
STEP 2 Answer the online questionnaire as part of the GrassrootsHealth study
STEP 3 Using our educational materials and tools (such as our dose calculators), assess your results to determine if you are in your desired target range or if actions should be taken to get there
STEP 4 After 3-6 months of implementing your changes, re-test to see if you have achieved your target level(s)
