A New Umbrella Review Highlights Benefits for Several Allergic Conditions

Key Points

  • A new review found that lower vitamin D levels were consistently associated with several allergic diseases, including allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, asthma, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, and cow’s milk protein allergy.
  • Vitamin D supplementation significantly improved symptoms in allergic rhinitis, reduced disease severity in atopic dermatitis, and improved clinical outcomes in chronic urticaria.
  • The strongest evidence was found for the association between low vitamin D levels and chronic urticaria, which was graded as “highly suggestive” evidence.
  • Overall, the findings support vitamin D as a potentially valuable adjunct to conventional treatment for several allergic conditions.

A new umbrella review published by Hou et al. in Frontiers in Allergy evaluated the highest level of available evidence on vitamin D and allergic diseases, combining data from 14 meta-analyses involving more than 66,000 participants. Rather than looking at a single condition, the researchers examined the overall relationship between vitamin D status, vitamin D supplementation, and multiple allergic diseases. Their findings suggest that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels and correcting deficiency when present may help improve symptoms for several common allergic conditions.

Lower Vitamin D Levels Were Linked to Multiple Allergic Diseases

Across the studies reviewed, people with allergic diseases consistently had lower blood levels of vitamin D than healthy individuals. The most convincing association was seen with chronic urticaria (hives), while significant associations were also observed for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), atopic dermatitis (eczema), asthma, vernal keratoconjunctivitis (an allergic eye condition), and cow’s milk protein allergy. These findings reinforce the growing body of evidence suggesting that vitamin D plays an important role in regulating immune function and allergic inflammation.

Vitamin D Improved Symptoms in Allergic Rhinitis

Among people already diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, adding vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced nasal allergy symptoms. The authors concluded that vitamin D may be a useful adjunctive therapy alongside standard allergy treatment, particularly for individuals with low vitamin D status.

Reduced Severity of Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Vitamin D supplementation also produced meaningful improvements in atopic dermatitis, reducing overall disease severity compared with control groups. Because vitamin D helps regulate immune responses and supports skin barrier function, these findings provide additional support for correcting vitamin D deficiency in individuals with eczema.

Significant Improvement in Chronic Urticaria

The review found some of the strongest evidence for chronic urticaria. Individuals with urticaria were consistently found to have substantially lower vitamin D levels than healthy controls, and vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced clinical symptom scores. This was one of the highest-quality associations identified in the review, suggesting vitamin D may offer meaningful benefits as part of a comprehensive management strategy for chronic hives.

What Didn’t Show a Significant Benefit?

While the findings for allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria were encouraging, the review did not find significant evidence that vitamin D supplementation improved asthma or food allergy outcomes. In addition, prenatal vitamin D supplementation was not consistently associated with preventing allergic diseases in children.

Measuring Your Level is Important… Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

The only way to know is to test your levels! Testing versus blind supplementation is essential to know for sure if what you are taking is the right amount for you. Once you test your vitamin D (and other levels) to know where you are NOW, you can account for any upcoming changes in lifestyle over the coming months and adjust your intake to reach (or maintain) your targets.

Measure your:

  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium PLUS Elements
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • hsCRP
  • HbA1c
  • TSH
  • Type 1 Diabetes Autoantibodies

How Can You Use this Information for YOUR Health?

Having and maintaining healthy vitamin D and other nutrient levels can help improve your health now and for your future. Measuring is the only way to make sure you are getting enough!

STEP 1 Order your at-home blood spot test kit to measure vitamin D and other nutrients of concern to you, such as omega-3s, magnesium, essential and toxic elements (zinc, copper, selenium, lead, cadmium, mercury); include hsCRP as a marker of inflammation or HbA1c for blood sugar health

STEP 2 Answer the online questionnaire as part of the GrassrootsHealth study

STEP 3 Using our educational materials and tools (such as our dose calculators), assess your results to determine if you are in your desired target range or if actions should be taken to get there

STEP 4 After 3-6 months of implementing your changes, re-test to see if you have achieved your target level(s)
