Vitamin D Effect on Insulin Resistance Localized to Range of 16-36 ng/ml (40-90 nmol/L)
Insulin resistance is when cells in your body don’t respond well, or are resistant to insulin which leads to increased blood sugar and eventually type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that a higher vitamin D status is associated with both lower insulin resistance and lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
GrassrootsHealth Study on Insulin Resistance and Vitamin D
In 2013, GrassrootsHealth published a study that defined the specific range of vitamin D levels where an effect on insulin resistance was most likely to be found. This analysis used data from 4,116 adult enrollees in Pure North S’Energy Foundation (PNSF), a non-profit Canadian health foundation.
As shown on the chart below, the researchers found that the vitamin D association with insulin resistance was localized to the range of 16-36 ng/ml (40-90 nmol/L). In other words, vitamin D has the biggest impact on insulin resistance for those who start out with levels below 16 ng/ml and raise their levels above 36 ng/ml.
Identifying the response range for a particular disease is important for research and clinical treatment.
